G.R.A. Photography Club
The G.R.A. Photography Club field trips bring pleasant surprises.  On the suggestion of one of our club members, Dave Vance, we took a trip to a forgotten pond located on 89th and Burley, and a community garden located 8939 S. Burley in South Chicago, created by the South Chicago Art Center. This year the Artist's Garden received first place in Mayor Daley's Landscape Awards.
During our photo shoot we met interesting people and got a surprise tour of the garden. Our tour guide was Miguel Arceo, community gardener at the Artist’s Garden.  He noticed our club members in the garden taking pictures and enjoying nature, so he came out to talk.  Miguel took us on am impromptu tour and told us about all the vegetables and flowers the gardeners were cultivating. The beautiful flower on page one is a Cosmo that he planted. Arceo was very knowledgeable, and quite entertaining. Towards the  end of the tour he took a long plant and fashioned a flute, he even played a tune.  He said the children in the community love his flutes, and always ask for one.
We enjoyed our photo shoot and at the end, one of our members, Dave Vance, summed it up by saying, “Aren’t we some happy campers?”

These images are from Frog Pond on 89th and Burley.  This is truly a forgotten place.  As you can see the pond is full of garbage and debris, but life still survives.  The brown grass all around the green grass is a result of the chemicals that were sprayed around it to limit weed growth.
As the images progress you will notice that I started to move in closer and closer in my images.  Through the stench I began to see all the beauty that was there, and I decided to zero in on it.

These images are from the Artists Garden.  Once again I noticed that my images were close up.  I loved bending down taking my camera close to nature.  It was so serene.
